Appelation: Saint Julien Grand Cru Classé in 1855
Tasting note: 90-92 Points. The Chateau Lagrange 2011 is a blend of 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot and 6% Petit Verdot (the highest percentage of the latter since 2007.) In 2011, there were just four treatments in the vineyard compared to 12 in 2000. It has a deep purple colour. It has a very pure bouquet with blackberry, cassis, limestone and a touch of Margaux-like violets. It certainly has fine delineation. The palate is pure with silky smooth tannins, fine acidity and an almost Burgundy-like texture. This is a very accomplished Lagrange although I would like to see more personality. It shows good weight on the tensile finish however and is an accomplished Saint Julien. Neal Martin, eRobertParker.com
Food pairing: Will do well with any red meats grilled, cheese...
Grape varieties: 62% Cabernet Sauvignon, 32% Merlot, and 6% of Petit Verdot
Vinification: Elaboration in thermo-regulated stainless steel vats of 66 to 220 hl. Traditional Bordeaux vinification at 28°C , maceration of two or three weeks. Selection and blending of the cuvee to create the « Grand vin » and the second wine, les Fiefs de Lagrange
Maturing: in French oak barrels - (60% new for the Grand vin, 20% for the second wine, 30% for the white wine). Duration of 21 months for the « Grand vin» and 12 months for the second wine.
Weather conditions: An unusual climate with April and May exceptionally hot and dry. June, July and August are more “oceanic” with an alternative of very hot and rainy weather. September is moderate like in the last years

Size of the vineyard: The estate covers 182 hectares (450 acres), of which 118 hectares (292 acres) are under vine. Most of the plots benefit from a drainage system
Terroir / Soil: Located entirely within the appellation of Saint-Julien, the vineyard stretches in a single block over two North-South rises of Gunzian gravelly soil. In parts large and coarse and in others finer, this gravel is combined with sand or iron-rich clay depending on the plot.

The Japanese group, Suntory, acquired the domain when the purchase was signed by the company president, Mr Keizo Saji, in 1983. Marcel Ducasse was then recruited along with Kenji Suzuta to undertake the complete restructuring of the vineyard and a spectacular renovation of the whole estate. This first step was to mark the rebirth of CHÂTEAU LAGRANGE.

After twenty years of dedicated work, as well as human and technical investments, Lagrange had once again found recognition amidst its peers and had achieved a certain sense of fulfilment.
Today a new tandem, Matthieu Bordes and Keiichi Shiina, have taken over this quest for excellence. A second phase of investments began with the 2008 vintage, offering Lagrange the technical means to follow its ambitions.. The production of refined, elegant and expressive wines, in the best Saint-Julien style. There has also been an evolution of production methods towards a greater awareness of the environment and a reduction of ecological impact on the property.This philosophy is reflected not only in the respect shown for the domain’s History, and the nurturing of its truly exceptional Terroir, but also in the unique experiences shared all over the world around a glass of one of Lagrange’s wines.
